Simmerling
lab graduate student Kun Song was awarded the Merck Achievement Award
by the Chemical Toxicology Division of the ACS. The award was presented
at the ACS Fall 2007 National Meeting in Boston.

Simmerling lab graduate student Lauren Wickstrom was awarded the Sigma Xi Excellence in Research award. Congratulations!

Simmerling
lab graduate student Dan Roe successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis
entitled "Study of Biologically Relevant Phenomena Using Small Peptide
Models". Dan is in the Chemistry graduate program and is the 7th
student to earn his Ph.D. in the lab. Great job!

At the Intel Developer forum held in Beijing, Carlos Simmerling
was announced as the top winner in the Humanitarian Impact Innovation
category of the Itanium Innovation Contest. More information can be
found in the Stony Brook press release, the SGI press release, or the Itanium Solutions Alliance press release.
The award honored Dr. Simmerling's use of computers to study, HIV/AIDS,
cancer and drug-resistant tuberculosis, with the Alliance stating "Humanitarian Impact Innovation category winner Dr. Carlos Simmerling at
Stony Brook University is fulfilling a humanitarian need through
ground-breaking biomedical research". The
Itanium Alliance is a consortium of industry leaders such as Intel,
Microsoft, HP, SGI, Fujitsu, Redhat, Oracle and other hi-tech companies.

Simmerling lab graduate student Lauren Wickstrom
is one of five national winners of the American Chemical Society's CCG
Research Excellence awards for her work on protein folding. The award
will be given at the Fall 2007 ACS National Meeting in Boston. Lauren
is the 8th student in the Simmerling lab to win the prestigious ACS CCG award!

Carlos Simmerling was announced as one of 25 finalists in the Itanium
Innovation Alliance Innovation Contest. The Alliance consists
of Intel, HP, Microsoft, SGI and other industry leaders. Dr. Simmerling is one of nine finalists in the "humanitarian impact" category.

Research Excellence awards for her work on development of new treatments for drug-resistant tuberculosis. The award
will be given at the Spring 2007 ACS National Meeting in Chicago. Salma
is the 7th student in the Simmerling lab to win a CCG award.

Simmerling lab gradaute students Xiaolin Cheng and Asim Okur are two of the ten national winners of the American Chemical Society's CCG
Research Excellence awards for their work on DNA damage (Xiaolin) and protein folding (Asim) . The award
will be given at the Spring 2004 ACS National Meeting in Anaheim. Xiaolin and Asim are the 3rd and 4th students in the Simmerling lab to win a CCG award, and this is the second time that the Simmerling lab has won two out of
ten national awards.
